Production Designer
Richard Roberts is an award-winning Australian production designer and educator with nearly five decades of experience across theatre, dance, opera, musical theatre, film and television. Since beginning his professional career in 1977, he has designed for leading performing arts companies throughout Australia and internationally, combining an extensive creative practice with senior academic leadership.
Nearly five decades in performance design — began his professional career with the State Theatre Company of South Australia in 1977, building an extensive body of work across theatre, ballet, opera, musical theatre, film and television.
Major Australian Ballet productions — design credits include Don Quixote, Requiem, Molto Vivace and Raymonda, demonstrating his experience in creating theatrical environments for major dance productions.
Opera design experience — productions include Rigoletto and Don Pasquale for Opera Australia, and Parsifal and The Cunning Little Vixen for Victorian Opera.
Extensive theatre and musical theatre credits — productions include Stolen, The Sapphires, Fiddler on the Roof, Solomon and Marion and Next to Normal, spanning contemporary drama, musical theatre and major stage productions.
Collaborations with leading theatre companies — has worked with Melbourne Theatre Company, Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre, Belvoir and Black Swan, contributing to a broad range of productions across Australia's professional theatre sector.
Senior academic leadership and education — has held senior roles at the Victorian College of the Arts, Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, helping develop generations of theatre designers and production artists.
